Mayapple Press is a small literary press founded in 1978 by poet and editor Judith Kerman. We celebrate literature that is both challenging and accessible: poetry that transcends the categories of "mainstream" and "avant-garde"; women's writing; the Great Lakes/Northeastern culture; the recent immigrant experience; poetry in translation; science fiction poetry.

Woodstock Mayapple Writers’ Retreat – Public Readings Announced

The fifth annual Mayapple Writers’ Retreat will take place at Byrdcliffe in Woodstock, NY from July 26 to 31, 2016. The program includes four public readings of poetry and prose by regional and national writers.

In addition to Hudson Valley participants, this year’s writers come from Arkansas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Maryland, Western and Southern Tier New York, and the US Virgin Islands.

Wednesday, July 27, 7:00 pm at the Villetta Inn, 3 Upper Byrdcliffe Way, Woodstock (next to Byrdcliffe Theater). Readers: Shannon Frystak, Judith Kerman, Amy Riddell, Kathleen Hellen.

Thursday, July 28, 7:00 p.m. at New World Home Cooking, 1411 NY Rt. 212, Saugerties: Goat Hill Poets, including Leslie Gerber, plus Gillian Royes.

Friday, July 29, 6:30 p.m. at Woodstock Library, 5 Library Lane, Woodstock. Readers: Rosalyn Rossignol, Wendy Taylor Carlisle, Joyce Kessel.

Mayapple Press announces dates and open applications for 2016 Woodstock Mayapple Writers’ Retreat

Historic Byrdcliffe Arts Colony, Woodstock NY

The Woodstock Mayapple Writers’ Retreat returns for its fourteenth year. This year the Retreat will take place from Tuesday July 26th to Monday August 1st. Once again we return to the rustic comfort of the Viletta Inn at the renowned Byrdcliffe Arts Colony in Woodstock, NY.

Recharge your batteries, pick up new ideas and techniques, make friends and influence people. Write and work with a discerning group of peers at a professional-level writers’ retreat and peer workshop with a comfortable, egalitarian atmosphere and a modest cost.

Several different workshops and working groups are available and each writer is featured in a public reading.

Prices remain the same as last year: $600 for residents and $350 for commuters. Discounts are available for early payment and for returning attendees. Residents can pay extra for A/C.

The Woodstock Mayapple Writers’ Retreat is almost upon us. Every year the participants in the Retreat present Public Readings around the area. Admission is free to most events and books are available for sale at all events. Credit card payments are accepted for book sales.

Readers Vincent Cooper, Barbara Diehl, Nola Garrett, Joyce Kessel:

Vincent O. Cooper, who teaches English at the University of the Virgin Islands, has published his original poetry in several international journals such as Kunapipi, Journal of Caribbean Studies, The Caribbean Writer, and many others. He has co- authored poetry collections, including, Three Islands, Tremors, and Tigers in Paradise. Cooper has been a former Fulbright Scholar on Belizean language and culture. He has also published his research on Derek Walcott.

Barbara Westwood Diehl is founding editor of The Baltimore Review. Her fiction and poetry have been published

Schedule of Public Readings Announced – Woodstock Mayapple Writers’ Retreat

The Woodstock Mayapple Writers’ Retreat is almost upon us. Every year the participants in the Retreat participate in Public Readings around the area. Here is the list of events and readers for 2013:

Wednesday, July 31, 7:30 pm at New World Home Cooking in the back room. Readers are poets Wendy Taylor Carlisle, Diane Sautter Cole, Vincent O. Cooper and Judith Lechner.

Thursday, August 1, at 7:30 p.m, at the main room of the Villetta Inn at Byrdcliffe (next to the Byrdcliffe Theater on Upper Byrdcliffe Road). Patricia Harkins-Pierre and Vincent O. Cooper, both faculty at the University of the Virgin Islands, will present a talk on Caribbean poetry. In addition, a workshop will be offered; local poets are welcome to bring a poem for critique.

Friday, August 2, at 5 p.m., at the Outdated Antiques Café, 314 Wall St., Kingston. Readers are Sandra Ebner, Leslie Gerber, and Patricia Harkins-Pierre.
