Mayapple Press is a small literary press founded in 1978 by poet and editor Judith Kerman. We celebrate literature that is both challenging and accessible: poetry that transcends the categories of "mainstream" and "avant-garde"; women's writing; the Great Lakes/Northeastern culture; the recent immigrant experience; poetry in translation; science fiction poetry.

Judith Kerman – Easternmost West-Flowing River – Lyrics

the hills around it lie
humped under their blankets
black-green forests
stare at their faces in its mirror
grey around the temples

deep wrinkles
between the ground down hills
winter squats over them
but water still flows under ice

easternmost west-flowing river
cuts the shale and slate
weathers out trilobites
dusty grey casts of what
once crept along the sea floor
faceted eyes still staring

in a small cardboard box
treasures from when
I picked rocks by the west-flowing river
my own face in the mirror

About “Written on Water”
Note: this book includes a bonus CD!
The Allegheny River is the easternmost west flowing river in the United States and was a major thoroughfare for early settlers. This anthology looks at the Allegheny historically, and as both a recreation area and a spiritual area today. The poems and prose pieces detail the full flow of the river, beginning near Port Allegany, PA; crossing the state line into New York; dropping back into Pennsylvania through small towns and forests; and merging with the Monongahela at Pittsburgh to form the Ohio River.
