What Snakes Want by Kita Shantiris was shortlisted for the Eric Hoffer Award. The eventual winner was The Year of Living Virtuously (Weekends Off), by Teresa Jordan, published by Counterpoint Press. The shortlist is here. Congratulations to Kita for the august company in which she finds herself!
Kita was also awarded an “Honorable Mention” in the poetry section.
The Robot Scientist’s Daughter by Jeannine Hall Gailey was shortlisted for the Montaigne Medal. Each year, the Eric Hoffer Award presents the Montaigne Medal to the most thought-provoking books. These are books that either illuminate, progress, or redirect thought. Mayapple Press is happy to announce that What Snakes Want by Kita Shantiris is in contention for two different book awards.
Foreword Reviews has named What Snakes Want as a 2015 INDIEFAB Book of the Year Award Finalist in the Poetry (Adult Non-Fiction) category. The Foreword Reviews Award winners will be announced at an event at the ALA Annual Conference in Orlando, in June.
What Snakes Want is also short-listed for the Eric Hoffer Award. The Eric Hoffer Award honors the memory of the great American philosopher Eric Hoffer. In addition to the grand prize, Hoffer honors are bestowed by press type and category, and also through the Montaigne Medal, da Vinci Eye, and First Horizon Award. The 2016 results will be announced within the month.

Mayapple Press is happy to announce that Garrison Keillor, host of A Prairie Home Companion and of the Writer’s Almanac, will include “With Their Wings” by Jean Nordhaus in his program on March 11, 2016. The poem is taken from Jean’s new collection Memos from the Broken World
The Writer’s Almanac is a daily radio program produced by American Public Media (APM). In each program Mr. Keillor presents a list of cultural events and anniversaries, many associated with literature and literary figures, then ends with the poetry reading. APM currently distributes the program for broadcast to about 600 non-commercial public radio stations around the country. The program audio is also streamed and podcast from and archived on the APM website at http://writersalmanac.publicradio.org and may be streamed, archived on carrying station websites as well.
