Mayapple Press is a small literary press founded in 1978 by poet and editor Judith Kerman. We celebrate literature that is both challenging and accessible: poetry that transcends the categories of "mainstream" and "avant-garde"; women's writing; the Great Lakes/Northeastern culture; the recent immigrant experience; poetry in translation; science fiction poetry.

Every year the book community gets together for the huge and important Association of Writers and Writing Programs Conference. From the conference materials:

The AWP Conference & Bookfair is an essential annual destination for writers, teachers, students, editors, and publishers. Each year more than 12,000 attendees join our community for four days of insightful dialogue, networking, and unrivaled access to the organizations and opinion-makers that matter most in contemporary literature.

This year, as in past years, Mayapple Press will be at the Conference and sharing a table with our friends at One Wet Shoe. We’ll be in the Exhibition Hall at Booth 1237 (right in front of the AWP Stage), come by and say hi! The table will be staffed by authors and editors and we’ll be happy to see you and talk poetry. We’ll also have books for sale, of course. We take credit cards, so don’t be shy.

About “Written on Water”
Note: this book includes a bonus CD!
The Allegheny River is the easternmost west flowing river in the United States and was a major thoroughfare for early settlers. This anthology looks at the Allegheny historically, and as both a recreation area and a spiritual area today. The poems and prose pieces detail the full flow of the river, beginning near Port Allegany, PA; crossing the state line into New York; dropping back into Pennsylvania through small towns and forests; and merging with the Monongahela at Pittsburgh to form the Ohio River.

Edited by Judith Kerman & Amee Schmidt

The Rustbelt Roethke Writers’ Workshop/Retreat was inspired by the work and life of Pulitzer-Prize-winning poet Theodore Roethke (1908-1963), who was born and brought up in Saginaw, Michigan. The Workshop has met each July since 2002, providing experienced writers with a comfortable, egalitarian atmosphere of peer (teacherless) workshops and public readings. This anthology was published during the centennial year of Roethke’s birth as part of the year-long Roethke Centennial celebration.

Shoo Doobie Doobie Do
by Helen Ruggieri

Chuck Berry duckwalks across stage.
We clap and scream.
We’re yelling “Maybelline”
rocking up on the balls of our feet.
Nobody sits.
Down front they dance in the aisle
pushing and tugging in double time.
“Why cancha be true. . . .”

About ten rows down the guy
I like puts his arm around
a dark haired girl with spit curls.
